Untreated Gonorrhea can lead to Serious Complications

  1. UROGENITAL GONORRHOEA:
  • SYMPTOMS: In men, symptoms may include painful urination, pus-like discharge from the penis, and testicular pain. In women, symptoms may include increased vaginal discharge, painful urination, vaginal bleeding between periods, and abdominal pain. EFFECTS IF UNTREATED*: Can lead to complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women, which can cause infertility, ectopic pregnancy, and chronic pelvic pain. In men, it can cause epididymitis, leading to infertility.
  1. PHARYNGEAL GONORRHOEA:
SYMPTOMS: Often asymptomatic but can cause sore throat, difficulty swallowing, and swollen lymph nodes.
  • EFFECTS IF UNTREATED: Rarely leads to severe complications but can act as a reservoir for the bacteria, contributing to its spread.
  1. RECITAL GONORRHOEA:
  • SYMPTOMS: Can be asymptomatic or cause symptoms like rectal pain, discharge, bleeding, and painful bowel movements.
  • EFFECTS IF UNTREATED: This can lead to proctitis, which is inflammation of the rectum.
  1. DISSEMINATED GONOCOCCAL INFECTION (DGI):
  • SYMPTOMS: Fever, joint pain, multiple skin lesions, and tenosynovitis (inflammation of the tendon sheath).
  1. INFERTILITY:
  • EFFECTS IN WOMEN: Untreated gonorrhea can cause PID, leading to scarring of the fallopian tubes and infertility.
  • EFFECTS IN MEN: Can cause epididymitis, which may lead to infertility if not treated.
  1. INCREASED RISK OF HIV:
  • EFFECTS: Untreated gonorrhea increases the susceptibility to and transmission of HIV.
  1. COMPLICATIONS IN PREGNANCY:
  • EFFECTS: Can lead to complications such as preterm birth, infection of the amniotic sac and fluid, and transmission to the baby during delivery, causing neonatal conjunctivitis or sepsis
